In a thrilling finish, TCC’s Michael Haney, 16, won the 1,000 yard freestyle with a speedy 9:12.15 at the 2011 Southern California Invitational held at Belmont Plaza.  Michael’s time achieved him his first Senior National time standard.  Michael also won the 200 free (1:39.19) and was 2nd in the 100 fly (50.16), 3rd in the 50 free (20.98) and 100 free (45.46).

The men’s 400 free relay of Michael Haney, Kyle Coan, Kevin Coan, and Jason Haney captured the win with a 3:08.37 and the quartet of Kyle Coan, Jason Haney, Brandon Porter and Michael Haney finished 2nd in the 800 free relay with a 6:53.40.

TCC placed 4th in the overall team combined scores.
Others scoring points were:

Rebecca Coan, 17, finished 9th in the 100 fly and 13th in the 200 I.M.  She also had a lifetime best in the 100 back (1:00.01).
Kate Santilena, 16, scored in the 100 fly (6th, 57.20), 200 back (11th, 2:05.93), 200 I.M. (12th), 200 free (20th) and 100 free (21st).
Oriana Wang, 16, competed on Saturday and had a lifetime best 200 fly (9th, 2:05.98) and was 11th in the 100 free.
Jason Haney, 17, placed 9th in the 200 free, 17th in the 100 free and 100 back, and 22nd in the 50 free.
Brandon Porter, 17, was 11th in the 200 fly, 17th in the 100 fly and 18th in the 400 I.M.

“I am really pleased with some of the efforts this weekend.  Everyone has been sick so to have some best times is a really good sign.  Michael’s meet was very good and his 1,000 was an awesome swim.  He saved his best for last.  His last 100 was unbelievable.  Noelle performed as usual despite being sick all week.  She is a real champ,” stated Head Coach John Ries.

SONIA WANG SCORES FOR SCS ALL-STAR TEAM

Posted on January 10th, 2011

“It was a fun trip.  It is a great opportunity for these young athletes to learn to travel and still swim fast.  Southern California Swimming was victorious and Sonia scored the SCS team  lots of points.  She did a lot of swimming and won several events,” said All-Star Coach Jennifer Tarazona (Jennifer coached the 11-12 girls).  Sonia, 14, won the 13-14 girls 200 back (2:00.74, best time), the 500 free (4:56.76, best time), and the 200 butterfly (2:03.24).  She also finished 2nd in the 200 I.M., 100 back, and the 400 I.M.  The two-day all-star meet was held in Mt. Hood, Oregon.  The Southern California All-Stars were selected off their performances at the Winter Age Group Championships and the CA/NV Sectional meets.  Southern California Swimming  finished in first with 999 points, followed by Pacific Swimming with 935, Pacific Northwest (Washington), British Columbia, and Team Oregon.
